Diamond Engagement Rings

Engagement Rings

The Best Engagement Rings in Houston

So, it’s time to buy an engagement ring. Let’s face it, most of us have heard that you should spend two months’ salary on one. What nobody tells you is how many different combinations of settings, diamond quality, and stone cuts there are.

Diamond engagement rings are one of the hardest pieces of jewelry to shop for, since you want it to be a surprise! After all, you can’t just go to your partner and ask what style of ring they want. During our more than one hundred years in business, we have seen some pretty clever ways to get an idea of what your special somebody wants, but nothing can beat an experienced jewelry specialist. So don’t worry, you are not alone! We pride ourselves on our customer service and we are here to help!

When it comes to your engagement, Houston Jewelry and Fine Gifts is dedicated to helping you find your perfect ring with a beauty that will last for decades. We stock styles from every era—whether you're drawn to timeless solitaires, ornate Victorian settings, Art Deco designs, 1940s-inspired halos, or contemporary modern pieces. Our collection has a vast amount of styles, including authentic estate engagement rings, vintage-inspired designs, rose gold, yellow gold and white gold engagement rings, princess cut engagement rings, simple diamond engagement rings, and many, many more.

Whether you are looking for a simple solitaire diamond ring, a beautiful vintage inspired ring, a genuine estate piece with history, or an exquisite diamond halo ring, we have the perfect ring for you.

We specialize in the latest fine jewelry designs that are both in line with the current trends as well as with the most timeless classic styles. We stock a large selection of diamond semi-mounts as well as a large selection of GIA certified laser inscribed loose diamonds for you to create your ring.

Buying a ring is actually a two-step process. You not only have to pick out a mounting, but you have to choose a diamond as well. Even then there is another factor: Price. Your first decision, even before you look at any rings, is how much you will be spending.

No matter how much you like a diamond or a mounting you have to stay in your budget. Let our trained professionals help you do that! We know exactly how to select the right stones for the ring you want, while still keeping you in your price range. Stop in today and let us find your perfect ring at the perfect price!

It’s important to remember that this is a once-in-a-lifetime purchase that will last. Think of the many purchases you make for your home and yourself which don't last, which depreciate as they are used, and which you will have to re-purchase several times. Your diamond ring, however, has lasting value and will always be the enduring symbol of you and your partner’s love, as well as go on to be a family heirloom.

The perfect ring marks the beginning of your life together, and will remain a symbol of your love and commitment to marry for the rest of your lives. And, your diamond ring is something you'll both be proud of... Forever.

Understanding the 4 C's of Diamonds

When selecting an engagement ring, it's essential to understand diamond quality. The 4 C's—Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut—determine both a diamond's beauty and its value.

Carat Weight: Carat measures diamond weight. One carat equals 200 milligrams. Larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable, but two diamonds of identical carat weight can vary significantly in price based on color, clarity, and cut quality. A 1.0 carat diamond might range from $3,000 to $10,000+ depending on the other three C's.

Color: Diamond color is graded D (colorless) through Z (light yellow). Colorless diamonds (D-F) are most valuable and popular for engagement rings. Most people cannot detect color differences between grades D and G without professional comparison. Saving on color (choosing H-I grades) while upgrading carat weight often provides better visual results.

Clarity: Clarity measures the presence or absence of inclusions and surface blemishes. Grades range from FL (Flawless) to I3 (Included). VS1 and VS2 grades offer excellent clarity for the price—inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. SI1 grades can also offer great value, as many inclusions are not visible without magnification.

Cut: Cut refers to how well a diamond's facets are proportioned and polished. Excellent and Very Good cuts maximize light reflection, creating maximum sparkle and beauty. Cut is the most important factor in diamond appearance. A well-cut diamond in a lower color grade will appear more brilliant than a poorly-cut diamond of higher color.

Popular Engagement Ring Styles

Solitaire: A single diamond on a simple band. Classic, elegant, timeless. Lets the diamond shine without distraction. Perfect for traditional aesthetics and those wanting maximum emphasis on the center stone. Most versatile style that never goes out of fashion.

Halo: A center stone surrounded by smaller diamonds or gemstones. Creates a larger appearance, enhanced sparkle, and elegant framing. Excellent for vintage-inspired preferences. A 0.75 carat center stone can appear as large as a 1.0+ carat solitaire.

Three-Stone: Center diamond with flanking side stones (typically diamonds). Symbolizes past, present, and future. Beautiful balanced design with meaningful symbolism. Often uses smaller side stones with larger center stones to maximize the visual impact.

Vintage-Inspired: Ornate designs featuring filigree, milgrain detailing, and detailed metalwork. Often incorporating colored gemstones alongside diamonds. Perfect for those loving historical aesthetics and intricate craftsmanship.

Modern/Contemporary: Geometric designs, mixed metals, unconventional settings. Angular lines and contemporary materials. Ideal for those with forward-thinking taste and contemporary style preferences.

Engagement Ring Shopping Tips

1. Determine Your Budget First: Decide what feels comfortable. There's no "correct" amount—it should reflect your personal situation and values.

2. Learn Before Shopping: Understanding the 4 C's helps you make confident decisions and identify true value in the marketplace.

3. Prioritize What Matters: Some prefer larger diamonds, others prioritize color or cut. Know your preferences before shopping.

4. Get Certification: Always request GIA certification for diamonds over 0.5 carats. This guarantees authenticity and establishes value.

5. Consider Longevity: Your engagement ring will be worn daily. Choose durable metals and secure settings built to last a lifetime.

6. Try On Multiple Styles: Don't assume you know what you'll love. Try different styles to see what truly makes you happy.

Engagement Ring FAQs

Q: What's the average engagement ring price?
Average spending varies widely ($1,000-$5,000 common), but your perfect ring should match your budget and values, not external expectations. We have beautiful engagement rings at every price point.

Q: Can lab-grown diamonds work?
Absolutely. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical to mined diamonds, cost 30-40% less, and many consider them more ethical. They're chemically indistinguishable from mined diamonds.

Q: Should I buy the setting and stone separately?
Yes. Purchasing GIA-certified loose diamonds and quality settings separately often saves 15-25% compared to pre-made rings, and gives you complete customization.

Q: How do I know if it's the right ring?
When you see "the one," you'll feel it. Take time, try on options, and trust your instincts. Don't settle—this is a ring you'll wear for life.

Q: What metals work best for engagement rings?
All precious metals work beautifully: white gold (contemporary), yellow gold (classic), rose gold (romantic), and platinum (most durable). Choose based on your personal style and skin tone.

Q: Is resizing possible after purchase?
Yes, all engagement ring settings can be resized to fit properly. We offer free lifetime sizing adjustments with your purchase.

Q: Can I upgrade my engagement ring later?
Absolutely. Our trade-in program allows you to upgrade to a larger or different diamond while receiving fair value for your current ring.

Settings

Prong - A setting that uses metal prongs to hold a stone in place while allowing as much light as possible to reflect through the stone.
Bezel - A bezel setting completely hides the edges of the stone to protect it from chips and snags.
Channel - Type of setting often used in mounting many smaller stones of uniform size in a row. Stones are not held by individual prongs but rather continuous strips of metal forming a channel into which are fitted the outer edges of the row of stones.
Pave - A type of setting in which many small stones are set as closely together as possible to appear as an all-diamond surface without any metal showing.

Arrangements

Solitaire - The mounting of a single gemstone. The prong set, round cut solitaire is about the most simple engagement ring style you can get!
Halo - A ring of small diamonds surrounding a center stone, giving it the illusion of greater size and a huge amount of sparkle.
Side-stone - The usage of a few small, often colorful stones as accents for the center stone.
Cluster - An arrangement of several small stones so that they appear as one large center stone.

Cuts

Round - The classic diamond shape, the round cut diamond has been designed to produce as much sparkle as possible.
Fancy - A diamond cut other than round - such as baguette, emerald, marquise, pear, or princess.
Princess - The princess cut has incredible brilliance with its square shape and sharp edges.
Cushion - A square cut with round edges, cushion cut diamonds have great brilliance and a long history that make them perfect for vintage settings.
Baguette - The small, rectangular shaped baguette diamonds are often used to enhance the setting of a larger stone.
Emerald - A rectangular step-cut with cropped corners, the emerald cut diamond has a more subtle sparkle, but shows off its clarity beautifully.
Marquise - An elongated cut with curved sides and pointed ends, the marquise cut slims the finger, and shows great sparkle as well.
Pear - The teardrop shaped pear cut slims fingers and helps a stone to appear larger.
