GIA Certification & Diamond Grading
Understanding GIA Certification
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the world's leading authority on diamonds and gemstones. GIA certification provides independent, unbiased grading of diamonds and colored stones using rigorous international standards.
The 4 Cs of Diamond Quality
GIA established the universal language for describing diamonds: the 4 Cs. Understanding these factors helps you make informed decisions about diamond purchases.
Carat Weight
How much does the diamond weigh?
One carat equals 200 milligrams. While carat weight is important, two diamonds of identical carat weight can vary dramatically in value based on the other three Cs. Carat weight is the easiest to understand but shouldn't be the only factor in your decision.
Color
How colorless is the diamond?
GIA grades diamond color on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light color). Most diamonds suitable for fine jewelry range from D to J. The subtle differences in color grade significantly affect value. A G-color diamond may look identical to a D-color to the untrained eye, but pricing differs considerably.
Clarity
How free from inclusions is the diamond?
GIA clarity grades range from FL (Flawless) to I3 (Included 3). Most diamonds contain tiny inclusions—these are nature's fingerprints. Clarity grade measures visibility and location of these inclusions. VS1 and VS2 grades offer excellent eye-clean diamonds at reasonable prices.
Cut
How well was the diamond cut and proportioned?
Cut is the most important C for diamond brilliance. Excellent and Very Good cuts maximize light return, creating that prized sparkle. Cut quality dramatically affects a diamond's beauty regardless of carat weight.

Our Three Independent Testing Methods
While we emphasize GIA certification, Houston Jewelry also uses three independent methods to verify every diamond:
Kee Gold Tester
Thermal conductivity testing specific to diamonds. This electronic test differentiates genuine diamonds from moissanite, cubic zirconia, and other imitations.
XRF Analysis (X-Ray Fluorescence)
Advanced elemental analysis confirming diamond composition and detecting treatments or coatings.
Nitric Acid Test
The classic chemical test that definitively distinguishes diamonds from all imitations.
Triple verification ensures the diamond you purchase is exactly what you believe it to be.
